Searching For Jobs Online

To be able to search for a job online it is nessesary to have basic computer skills including many of the skills that are needed for Online Teaching and Learning. BasicComputing, TimeManagement? and ResearchSkills? are a must. Strong written communication skills and the ability to network with other online students are helpful.

It may be a good idea to start by finding professional organizations and trade groups for the field that you are hoping to enter. Some examples of these organizations representing fields found in UR's School of Continuing Studies are:

There are also many online jobs search engines. Some of these include:

Another source of possible job leads is individual companies for which you would be interested in working. It is important to be creative, your dream job might not be advertised with your dream job title. Companies that you might not have considered may need your services and skills more than the obvious choices (there may be less competion for these positions). Some examples of this are:

  • Public school systems have need of emergency management and preparedness.

  • Any corporation that has a legal department has need of paralegals.

  • Almost every business that has a single computer needs information systems specialists.

Lastly, make sure to exhaust the capablities of your university. The University of Richmond has a Career Center and the OWL can help with your resume. If you use these services you will be that much ahead of your competition when you graduate.
