Online Learning Glossary

Accessibility Making a website viewable/audible/easily navigable by users with various disabilities.
ADL Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative - is sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense. It was established to promote the interoperability of learning resources and tools over the web.
AICC Aviation Industry CBT Committee - The AICC develops guidelines to promote the interoperability of learning content.
BLOG Web Blog - an online diary or a collection of thoughts on a topic of interest. Visit the University of Richmond's Online Learning & Teaching Blog.
Copyright Copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States (title 17, U.S. Code) to the authors of “original works of authorship,” including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works. See CopyrightOverview for more information.
Fair Use A portion of a copyrighted work can be used without permission for specific purposes such as "criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research." See Title 17 U.S. Code §107 and FairUse for more information.
HTTP
HyperText
Transfer Protocol - the primary method used to convey information on the World Wide Web. HTTP is a request/response protocol between clients and servers.
IM Instant Messenger - a client that hooks up to an instant messaging service. Instant messaging differs from e-mail in that conversations happen in realtime. See InstantMessaging for more information.
IMS The IMS Global Learning Consortium is a non-profit worldwide organization dedicated to learning standards and interoperability in learning content.
Learning Object Repository A collection of learning objects. Examples of repositories include: Merlot, CAREO, ARIADNE and ALI, the Apple Learning Interchange.

LMS Learning Management System - A learning management system manages instructional content. Examples include both Blackboard and Moodle.
News Aggregator A software application or remotely hosted service that collects syndicated content from disparate sources and provides a single consolidated view. These applications can also be commonly referred to as a feed reader, feed aggregator or simply just an aggregator.
Podcasting A method of publishing files to the Internet, often allowing users to subscribe to a feed and receive new files automatically by subscription, usually at no cost. It first became popular in late 2004, used largely for audio files.
RSS Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary - an xml format that allows for the distribution of content over the web. A news reader or rss reader is the software tool necessary to view information written in this format.
SCO Sharable Content Object
SCORM Sharable Content Object Reference Model - "created to foster creation of reusable learning content as 'instructional objects' within a common technical framework for computer and Web-based learning." --ADL Website, accessed 08/25/2004 .
SPAM Unsolicited commercial e-mail sent to a large number of addresses. See DecreaseSPAM for more information.
URL Uniform Resource Locator - standardized address name layout for some resource (such as a document or image) on the Internet.
W3C The World Wide Web Consortium is a consortium that produces the software standards for the World Wide Web. The Consortium is headed by Tim Berners-Lee, the original creator of URL, HTTP, and HTML, the principal technologies that form the basis of the Web.
WAI Web Accessibility Initiative - a resource for web developers and educators creating online learning content so that is available to individuals with disabilities.
Wiki This word comes from the Hawaiian word "quick" or "super fast". In the words of Ward Cunningham, it is the simplest online database that could ever work. The Wikipedia - the free encyclopedia edited by anyone in the world. What is wiki - a link to the Wiki history.
