Mobile Technolgy

Mobile technology has evolved over the recent years. Now a student can learn from anywhere without sitting in a classroom or being tied to a desktop computer.

Palm Phones

There is a new phone manufactured by Palm One, that gives you a powerful communication device in the palm of your hand. These new phones provide e-mail applications to the user and allow the user to have acess to multiple e-mail accounts, so they can stay in touch with the office, home and school. The Treo 650 wireless can access Cingular's voice service, Cingular's Xpress Mail service and an option to receive unlimited data transactions on the wireless phone. This serive allows the user to receive e-mails from the employees corporate Microsoft Exchange Server as well as other POP3 e-mail accounts. A student at the University of Richmond would be able to have e-mails sent to their wireless phone over the Cingualr network and stay in touch with messages from professors and other classmates. Productivity is a major selling point to these phone. Professionals and students can always be connected to their e-mail accounts, can access the web and can send instant messages over the wireless network using one of these PalmPhones?.

Posted is a link to an article that describes the Treo 650 and the services that can be bundled with the regular voice service (http://newman.richmond.edu:2054/universe/document?_m=b97e2577efebf2f0c8b03b948c7820da&_docnum=6&wchp=dGLbVtz-zSkVb&_md5=6d126ceb9d4a2a3892028228c3c0318e). A descriptoion of the phone can also be found at palmone.com.

Palm Computing

Colleges and universities across the country are experimenting with PalmComputing and how it can help both the instructor and students in and out of the classroom. While the PalmPhones have made communicating with everyone easier, PalmComputing is increasing productivity and becoming more popular with all working professionals. Palm users can dowload Microsoft Word and Excel documents and review and edit the documents on the small screen that is held in the palm of their hands. These small devices can be synched with the users desktop or laptop and certain predetermined information can be downloaded to the Palm unit. Once the informaiton is in the device, the user can read, store, edit and send the information to other people using Palm units or another desktop or laptop computer.

Wireless Blogging

People can now use blogs wherever they are. They do not have to be tied to a desktop computer or using a wireless router with their laptops around the house anymore. This weekend, July 2, 2005, the world will celebrate a large musical concert with many artists performing at various locations around the globe. The Live 8 concert will showcase today's top musical talent and also bring awareness to the poverty in Africa. Students in general are big music fans and they like to share their experiences with others. At Live 8, wireless phone users will be able to blog their experiences from the concert and as the spectators watch the event on television and listen to it on digital satellite radio. Bloggers will also be able to post their political messages about the G8 summit and have their opinions read by millions. With the advances in wireless technology, users can stay in touch with the global community and can post any message instantaneously from anywhere in the world.
