Current Class Assignments

ECON 221 or ECON 101

Professor: Erik Craft

Due: April 13, 2006

Notes: I don't have a lot of detail about this assignment, but I wanted to mention it since I encountered a confused student at the desk last night. Dr. Craft has provided the students with a long list of references (~10 pages) that they may want to consult for a paper they are writing. I believe it has to do with the history of economics. The student I spoke with seemed to think Dr. Craft had told them that all of the articles would be available at the library. However, the one he was looking for was not.

I asked Dr. Craft about this, and he said that he may have made a general statement about being able to get the articles at the library, but that he had not checked each citation, and had assumed that students could get them through ILL if needed.

If you have questions about locating these articles, please let the students know that we don't have every article on the list. Also, they will probably need to use articles that we DO have, rather than requesting them through ILL, since the assignment is due in a week.

Sociology 379

Professor: Wharton

Due: ?

Assignment: Select a job or occupation using the Bureau of Labor Statistics SOC Web page. Then use the Statistical Abstract of the United States to track the breakdown of sex with respect to the selected occupation for the following years: 1920, 1940, 1960, 1980, and 2000. Also find the breakdown by race (white vs. non-white) for each decade beginning with 1960.

Suggested Strategies:

* Probably best to use the print Statistical Abstracts

* If students can't find the information for their specific occupation in the volume associated with the year they are looking for (e.g. 1960), try looking in the succeeding volumes, since they often contain data from previous years. For example, I found a nice chart providing both types of statistics for 1960 in the 1965 volume of the Statistical Abstract. Thanks to Keith for this suggestion.

Additional Notes: I haven't actually heard from Dr. Wharton regarding this assignment, so I'm not sure when it is due. Please let me know if you have any questions, and feel free to add your suggestions for possible approaches to this assignment. Thanks, Olivia.
