Using the SMART Recorder, the instructor is able to record the events on the computer to a video file. This is handy when capturing a process you wish students to access outside of the classroom. These video files can be loaded into Blackboard for student access.

Create a Recording
smartboardmenu.gif 1. Select Start > All Programs > SMART Board Software > SMART Recorder or click on the Smartboard icon Smartboard system tray icon in the Windows toolbar and select Recorder (see image on right). The latter is preferable if you are standing at the board and not sitting at the computer.
2. The SMART Recorder window will open. Using the drop down list (click the down-pointing arrow to the right of the red recording button), select how much of the display you wish to record.
.....Record Desktop (Default): The recorder will capture the entire screen. This selection will use significantly more resources and the file size may be much larger than the other two selections.
.....Record Area: The recorder will request the area you wish to record. Click and drag from the top left corner to the bottom right corner of the area you wish to record. The recording area will be bounded by a red line. The recorder will not capture any movement outside of the area selected.
.....Record Window: The recorder will request which window you wish to record within. This is the best option for recording within a single program's interface. As an example, you could reduce the screen size of the Word application and only capture the work within the application interface. This would significantly reduce the file size of the final product.
3. Click on the red button in the SMART Recorder window to begin the recording process.
4. You may pause the recorder and restart by clicking the Record button during screen capture.
5. When you have completed recording, click the Stop button. The Save As window will open. Select the location you wish to save the file and click Save.
6. Depending on the length of the recording, the system may take a few seconds or several minutes to save the video file. Once finished, you will get a screen telling you the recording was successful. Click OK to continue.

Save video file to Blackboard
You may place the video file on Blackboard for your students to access.

1. Go to Blackboard and log in.
2. Select your course and enter the Control Panel.
3. Select your content area (normally Course Documents or Course Information, but you can rename these or create custom areas as well).
4. If you wish to place the file in a folder, select or create the folder and enter.
5. Select + Item.
6. Enter a name and, if desired, text describing the file.
7. Select the Browse button after Attach local file. Locate the video file on your computer. Highlight and click Open.
8. (Optional) Enter a name for the link.
9. Since the Smartboard recorder uses the AVI format. The video will not play correctly in most browsers. To assure playback, leave Special Action set to "Create a link to this file" and click Submit.
10. You should get a message the upload was successful. Click OK.
11. To test, click on the video link. A pop-up window asking whether to open the file or save to disk will appear.
